George Weah Elected Liberia’s New President

Former AC Milan legend and World Footballer of the Year George Weah has won the presidential election in Liberia, officially becoming the country’s new president. This marks the first time in Liberia’s history since 1944 that a peaceful transfer of power has taken place through democratic elections.

The spokesperson for Liberia’s National Election Commission called this election of historic significance. Weah is set to begin a six-year presidential term, taking office in January next year. Prior to the election, Weah had promised the people that, upon his election, he would focus on creating jobs and improving education and healthcare. The West African nation’s presidential election concluded on Tuesday, with Weah defeating Joseph Boakai, the current vice president and candidate from the Unity Party and the Democratic Change Party. This victory marks Weah’s third attempt at the presidency. Notably, the 51-year-old is the first “star president” in history.

During his playing career, Weah represented prominent clubs such as AS Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Marseille. His career reached its peak at AC Milan, where his outstanding performances earned him the Ballon d’Or and the World Footballer of the Year award, making him the only African player to have won such honors. Weah retired in 2003.

After retiring, Weah sought to use his influence to help his country and its people. He invested his own money to develop football in Liberia, but soon realized that individual efforts were insufficient. This led him to enter politics. On Wednesday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) congratulated the former Milan star on his election as Liberia’s president.

Weah’s election makes him the first football star to become a president, and CAF’s official Twitter account praised his achievement, stating: “Congratulations to George Weah! Former Ballon d’Or winner, now President of Liberia.” This is a choice made by the people of Liberia and a source of pride for African football.

Weah’s transition from footballing legend to national leader is as impactful as any defining moment in sports, much like the turning point in a thrilling BD Cricket Match where the unexpected happens, shaping the future of both players and nations. His journey highlights the potential for athletes to make a lasting impact beyond the field, becoming leaders for their communities.
